Panjim Nights

Goan Food Evening

Maybe its the fact that moving around the Algarve this summer has been so evocative of many places
I've been, and memories of places from decades ago. The bougainvilleas, red tiled roofs, whitewashed farm buildings and the sight of slightly feral looking happy pigs and donkeys shading themselves from the noon day sun. I could be talking about Goa, the other Portugal, where vestiges of Portuguese food still linger on in the menus and in the local recipes. So to end this Indian summer and to celebrate my lovely wife's birthday; a trip to old Goa.

Oaxaca on Saturday night

Dear Friends and Patrons,
Oaxaca, the deep heart of Mexico, the home of the Maya, giver of food to the world. Avocado, tomato, Corn and chilly and so much else. When I discovered  that Chilly came from the new world, it shook me to my Indian gastronomic core. Indian food or Thai food in a time before Chilly! How much we have been gifted...
In homage to that (and my Mexican chilly collection thanks to my old friend Barry) we visit Mexico.
thanks to mexicanwave.com for the pic

Direction to our place
1 km after leaving Casais 3km from Monchique town, turn left up the hill at the very first road, just before you hit the first building.
Bunch of mailboxes on the corner, small sign saying Portela Baixa./ Serenada
Follow the little wiggly tarmac road up,carry on (past the gravel road on your right which goes to Fionas)
The road makes a bend to the left, right there on the corner. Right at the corner is a dirt track which rises steeply up behind the road
follow it all the way up to the house.

From Monchique
take the Casais road at the Nave Quarry and carry on that road towards Casais.3km
Just before you leave the Monchique area the Portela Baixa turning is on the right up the hill.
If you start going downhill round a bend with
a red house across the valley you've just gone too far and missed the Portela Baixa turning.

Dear Friends,
whilst in New Mexico I periodically, or should i say erratically wrote a food blog. It has a few decent recipes as well as some thoughts and musings on food, nutrition and even a little philosophy. Thought I might share it
http://rustyindian13.blogspot.pt

Supper club will be on again this coming Saturday night.
By request Indian food will feature again. Will post a menu later today or tomorrow.

take care

A midsummers nights meal

I guess summer has finally arrived after months of ambivalence and indecision. Trees are laden with soft fruit, markets have become ever more abundant and my inclinations immediate turn to salads, fruit and cooling herbs.Rather going with geography, Im going with season and a menu that reflects delightful summer freshness and plenty.
Chilled cucumber soup
Melon and presunte de Porco preto
Fish with herbs, butter and garlic, with a caper and chipotle cream sauce
Rice with a medley of baby veg
Plum and strawberry summer pudding
House Cocktail and coffee

love and blessings

OH Kerala !

Well, Joni Mitchell would've sung it if she'd ever eaten there...no direspect to Canadians intended.

So its about time we revisited the sub continent, its been ten years since I was last in India and my heart always yearns to travel east especially to Kerala the gentle queen of the south: Kerala is coconut palms, bananna trees, dense jungles, the home of Ayurveda and the ancient spice trade, with its cardomom, coffee and  pepper, its magnificent sandalwood forests tigers and elephants.
I cant promise an elephant, but I hope we can create a little taste of that other southwest here in the genial, temperate Algarve.

Some homemade vegetable samosas ( beloved snack of all India)
A traditional Kerala fish curry
Cardomom Rice
Mango Raita
Cococonut and Banana Burfi.
House cocktail and coffe

hope to see you Friday..

Welcome back to the mountain

After the rain soaked wilds of muddy England, we returned to a full house for Fridays "Italian" themed night.
Crisp cool tangy cocktails from the resident potions mistress, gorgeous garden salad, roasted aubergine dip,
polenta with rosemary black pork and a wild mushroom sauce and creamy sumptuous Tiramisu.
What a great time, our now faithful regulars, some beautiful new faces, and an evening that just wanted to go on. Thank you to all of you. A special night in the fragrant cool hills. Sadly no leftovers........ life is cruel.

And a special announcement the upcoming Brunch club. Due to run weekends throughout the summer.
stay tuned for the menu and opening times. We promise there wont be a better, cooler or more relaxed way to get some of the best brunch fare in the Algarve. Head for the hills and be one step ahead of the madding crowd and heat of the day.

Back Again Friday 11th of May.

A small update folks. Life as always has its own plans which take precedence over your own imaginary ones. So the supper club moves to the 11th of May now. This length of hiatus might merit a full relaunch party

So as soon as we both return from a visit to England and Wales, and after a far too long hiatus
we will be really happy to resume the serious and pleasurable business of feeding people.
I've been itching to include the fantastic local Porco Preto, "black pork" from the Iberian black pig, a true heirloom or heritage semi-wild indigenous breed which does not lend itself to any kind of factory farming and is allowed to forage and feed on the local acorns of the cork oaks. Our superb raw dairy connection, keeps us in the best cream I've had in years and we strive to make the local produce feature large in the food.

As usual

Well The middle eastern night was fun and full of gratuitous excess, but the evening that followed was truly special. A performance and sound ceremony by Munayki - A truly magical evening, full moon puja/ land healing with Lucho Quitanilla and Patricia Lesage on the circular terrace specially prepared for sacred purpose by tamasina In the midst of the monsoon rains of April, the gods were kind, the rain and wind stayed away and the moon showed her beautiful face the whole time. Lucho is the real thing , an authentic Peruvian great soul, immersed in the earth and water cultures and their magic transmitted in an authentic lineage. He has wanted to do ceremony to honour this mountain ever since he came here for Peru. We were all transported. For a moment there when the great drum reverberated through the valley shattered the silence and every object simply vanished and there was nothing but the moon. Afterwards an authentic black Oaxacan Mole sauce to continue with the south american theme, and good company way past midnight.

Supper Club comes to the Algarve

3 Months ago almost to the day, We arrived in Southern Portugal having left many friends, a few lifetimes and the mountains of Northern New Mexico behind.  Armed with nothing but a few good ideas, a little courage, some kitchen knives and more art than we know what to do with we decided to take a few baby steps towards an idea that has been simmering quietly for many years
Food has always been a passion( probably a neurotic obsession in truth),
but as they say "your greatest weaknesses can become your greatest strengths"
Put simply , we like feeding people beautiful food in a circumstance of pleasure and comfort. After all, the aesthetic life is to live in service to beauty in all its forms.
So on Friday the 17th of February we started the Lemon Tree Supper Club
in the silent hills of Monchique. See the invite below.

Being Indian and a Parsi myself, it was only fitting to start with a (mostly)
Parsi style menu. (The Parsis, the last people of the great Persian Empire who left Iran 1300 years ago and landed on the western shores of India.)
My fantastic partner Tamasin is a Scottish born country girl, and all round creative genius who can do pretty much anything. (I kid you not)

This was the first of what we hope will be many menu's. By all accounts a wonderful night was had by all those who were brave enough to take a chance on something new, especially the lovely couple who drove all the way from the Alentejo for the evening and especially to our new friends who put the word out.

The theme of this supper club is to be truly global, to run every two weeks exploring the cuisines of the world so that every supper club night will be a unique event.
All the food is fresh local produce cooked from scratch with love and care, not a packet or can in sight, and organic where possible.

NEXT NIGHT IS FRIDAY MARCH 2nd : THAI FOOD NIGHT
menu to be announced

We can serve a maximum of 12 at this time.
All bookings must be in advance
Please, no late cancellations in the last 24hours.
Drinks: Bring your own.
time : 7:30-8:00pm every second friday.
